Gwangju Memories Chungjang Festival

The Gwangju Chungjang Festival of Memories began on Chungjang-ro in Dong-gu, Gwangju's busiest shopping district, and has grown into the city's largest and most representative festival. Built around the universal theme of "memories," it's known as Korea's first memory-themed festival, bringing together people of every generation and background to share cherished memories and create new ones together. The festival is centered on Geumnam-ro and 5·18 Democracy Square, sites of deep significance in the world history of democracy, giving it historical and cultural weight beyond that of a typical local festival. Held in this birthplace of Korea's democratization movement, it symbolizes citizens' hope for the future after past hardship. In recognition of its excellence, the festival was first named an Honorary Culture and Tourism Festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024, and was reselected for 2026-2027, holding that honor for four consecutive years (2024-2027). It also won the Grand Prize in the Global Premium category at the 2026 Korea Festival Content Awards, marking ten consecutive years of taking the top prize and confirming its status as one of Korea's leading global festivals. Looking ahead, the festival aims to grow into an international event that embraces the culture and memories of all Asia through cooperation with the Asia Culture Center, helping raise Gwangju's profile as Asia's cultural hub while serving as a space for connection and harmony through culture.
