About
The Gwangju Chungjang Festival of Memories began on Chungjang-ro, the busiest commercial street in Gwangju's Dong-gu district, and has grown into the city's largest and most representative festival. Built around the universal theme of "memories," it holds special significance as Korea's first festival centered entirely on nostalgia, bringing together people of every generation and background. Visitors share cherished memories of their own while making new ones together, turning the festival into a shared space for creating memories. It's held around Geumnam-ro and the 5·18 Democracy Square, sites deeply significant in the world history of democracy, giving the festival historical and cultural weight beyond that of an ordinary local event. Taking place in this sacred ground of democratization, it carries symbolic meaning as a display of citizens' hope for the future after past hardships. In recognition of its excellence, the festival was first designated an Honorary Culture and Tourism Festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024, and was reselected for 2026–2027, holding the title for four consecutive years (2024–2027). It also won the Grand Prize in the Global Premium category at the 2026 Korea Festival Content Awards, marking ten consecutive years of taking the top prize and reaffirming its status as one of Korea's leading global festivals. Looking ahead, the festival aims to grow into an international event that embraces the culture and memories of all of Asia through cooperation with the Asia Culture Center, helping raise Gwangju's profile as Asia's cultural hub while serving as a meaningful space for communication and unity through culture.
