Myeongnyang Great Victory Festival
명량대첩축제
About
The Myeongnyang Daecheop Festival is a patriotic history and culture festival commemorating the Battle of Myeongnyang, an unparalleled naval victory in world history in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin's Joseon navy, reinstated as Naval Commander of the Three Provinces, and fishermen from Jeolla Province defeated the Japanese fleet at Uldolmok on September 16, 1597. Held every year since 2008 as a joint event of Jeollanam-do, Jindo-gun, and Haenam-gun, it is a leading regional history and culture festival known for its ICT-based multimedia reenactment of the naval battle, a sea parade, a departure parade, and local performances. Scenic lighting is set up throughout the festival grounds, along with programs where visitors can experience history and culture firsthand, giving them a chance to relive the historic site of the Battle of Myeongnyang. Through this, the festival aims to spread awareness of the historical significance and patriotic spirit of the battle while introducing the historical, cultural, and tourism resources of Jindo and Haenam.
