About
The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, held in Hwacheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, is a unique winter festival that was named one of CNN's '7 Wonders of Winter' in 2011. It takes place every January when the crystal-clear Hwacheoncheon Stream freezes solid, and visitors can try ice fishing or even catching sancheoneo (masu trout), nicknamed the 'queen of the valley,' with their bare hands. Beyond the thrill of the catch, you can enjoy your trout right away as sashimi or grilled, and there's plenty more to do too, from ice sledding and snow sledding to bobsledding. Over one million visitors flock to the festival each year.
